BY JAN JACKSON
ALBANY, Ore. –Not long after the Willamette Valley Ag Expo started six years ago, Linn/Benton Chapter Women for Agriculture started participating with a small display that later turned into small booth space. However, at this years Expo, set for November 13, 14 & 15, at the Linn County Fair Grounds in Albany, you will find them and their display in the main lobby of the Willamette Event Center offering coffee and cookies to everyone that enters.
“We are looking forward to seeing everyone as they come into the Expo and we are excited to have the added space to display our programs,” Chelle Davis, assistant vice president of Citizens Bank and president of Linn-Benton Chapter of Women for Ag said. “It will be good exposure for our partners like Ag in the Classroom, our new Farming Keeps Oregon Green roadside sign project, and our membership programs.”
Oregon Women for Agriculture, an all volunteer group formed in 1969 by farm women in the Willamette Valley concerned bout the shutdown of grass seed field burning, has now broadened its program to include all facets of agriculture. Their purpose is to educate its members and the public about the importance of ag to the economy and to the environment; to unite all phases of Oregon ag having the same concerns; to improve the image of ag; to support and encourage research that will benefit ag and to do everything possible to see that agricultural interests are heard and dealt with fairly. A member of National American Agri-Women, OWA has active chapters in Central Oregon, Marion Clackamas Counties, Hood River County, Yamhill County, Polk County, Linn Benton Counties, Lane County and has individual members located throughout the state.
“In addition to promoting Ag in the Classroom and membership, we will introduce a brand new OWA Leadership Conference for Women set for Tuesday, January 22 at Comfort Suites in Salem,” Davis said. “Besides, it is going to be great to be able to say hello to the folks who come to the Expo.”
Betty Jo Smith, a grass seed grower from Shedd and a charter member of OWA recently honored as a 2007 member on the OSU Diamond Pioneer Agriculture Achievement Registry, is looking forward to seeing OWA up front at WVAE.
“This year is going to be a far cry from the first Expos where Fisher Implement so kindly let us put up a display in their booth,” Smith said. “We will have a great display and a good time greeting everybody.”
