Oregon Women for Agriculture is pleased to award a $2,000 scholarship to Caitlin Brown, a senior at Oregon State University and a member of Sigma Alpha.
Caitlin did not grow up in agriculture, but she was always drawn to “the animals, the land, and the people that were dedicated to providing for others.” While in college, she found the confidence to change her academic pathway and pursue a degree in agriculture—a decision she describes as intimidating at first, but ultimately life-changing. “That decision has completely reshaped my goals, my confidence, and my sense of purpose,” Caitlin shared. What began as uncertainty quickly became excitement as she discovered a field that challenged her and inspired her to believe in her own voice.
Since joining Sigma Alpha, Caitlin has immersed herself in Oregon’s agricultural community in meaningful ways. Through volunteer work and professional development, she has learned that “agriculture is not just about production, it’s about connection, education, and community.” Her experiences include volunteering with Ag in the Classroom, supporting education events and Ag Fest, assisting with the OWA auction, and participating in chapter meetings and socials.
Caitlin is majoring in Animal Science with a minor in Agricultural and Food Business Management. Her coursework has allowed her to explore livestock management, animal welfare, and food systems, while gaining insight into how farms operate as businesses. She has developed a strong interest in the dairy industry, particularly how producers “balance efficiency with environmental responsibility,” and how science, business, and community intersect within agriculture.
Looking ahead, Caitlin plans to remain actively involved in Oregon agriculture after graduation, with a focus on the dairy industry and food production. Reflecting on her journey, she shared, “Agriculture has taught me that passion doesn’t have to come from where you start, it can grow from where you choose to go.” While she may not have been raised in agriculture, Caitlin is confident she has found her place and her future. OWA is proud to support Caitlin in her educational pursuits in agriculture.
