As winter settles in, it provides a natural opportunity to reflect, evaluate, and strengthen the foundation of our organization. Over the past several months, your Board of Directors has been focused on important behind-the-scenes work to ensure Oregon Women for Agriculture is well-positioned for the future.

A key area of focus has been the transition to a nonprofit-focused accounting system. This work is essential to support our new organizational structure and ensure our financial practices align with best practices for nonprofit governance. By improving financial clarity, oversight, and reporting, the Board is reinforcing OWA’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and long-term sustainability.

In addition, the Board has been actively revising our bylaws to better reflect our updated nonprofit status. With OWA now operating as a 501(c)(3) organization and the OWA 501(c)(5) established as a separate entity for legislative and affiliated work, it is important that our governing documents clearly define roles, responsibilities, and operations for both entities. These updates help ensure compliance, reduce risk, and provide a clear framework for future leaders.

While much of this work may not be highly visible, it is critical to maintain the integrity and effectiveness of our organization. I want to thank our Board members for their time, diligence, and thoughtful approach to this transition. Their work reflects a shared commitment to strengthening OWA so we can continue to serve our members, advocate for agriculture, and educate our communities for years to come.

As we look ahead to the coming year, I encourage you to stay engaged and informed, and to reach out with questions or ideas. Together, we are building a strong, resilient organization rooted in agriculture and guided by good governance.

Wishing you a safe and restful winter season,

Sarah Puls
